Hey Steve,

The U shaped structures you see when looking down on the NU grey glass is actually not the plates but rather a bridge or spacer connecting what is most likely the grid support rods. I'm not sure what the exact purpose of this part is; perhaps it was used as reinforcement or to insure proper spacing. Note: Most 6SN7s don't have this part in their construction. The 1940s Tung Sol round plates happen to be another design that does.

The plates are located below the top mica, hidden from view in the NU grey glass. Here is a photo of a NU grey glass that I dissected:

As you can see, the plates are flat matte black.

In my experience, the NU grey glass is more rare (in quantity) then the Tung Sol round plates. However, there is incredible demand for the much lauded TS RP, and the prices reflect this demand.
