Hi,I am currently using a Rogue Perseus (very nice preamp BTW)and it uses 12AU7 tubes. I have quite a selection that I have tried. My favorites so far are the Telefunken smooth plates, RCA "Cleartops", and surprisingly (and again, this is opinion, and my ears) RCA "blackplate" 5963, which is a slightly lower current industrial 12AU7. I am a stranger to 12AX7 tubes as I have not had much experience with different brands, so I will not comment here. I have had tubed equipment for over 15 years, and if I might say, I have never really been disappointed in RCA tubes. I love their blackplated tubes, and there early versions of the 6SN7 are some of my favorites. They all are still relatively inexpensive. Others my disagree, and one must satisfy their own ears, so take this advice as it is intended, and that is offer opinion and options. Good luck!
