It sounds like you might be driving yourself crazy trying to look for the perfect tube. I was a primaluna prologue 2 owner and now have the prologue 3/5 combo, and have tried a few combinations of tubes in the couple of years I have had the amps. I am not a tube expert but will share my experiences: I thought the amp sounded a little "hard" when I first received it (granted it was not broken in yet) so I began experimenting with el34 tubes to try and warm thing sup a bit. started with EH el-34 which were ok but seemed a little bottom heavy to me. next came jj e34l which I thought was a pretty dynamic sounding el34 but after a couple of days of listening one tube began making noise and took out a resistor-have stayed away from jj tubes since then. I liked the new sensor reissue Mullard el34 thought it was a nice warm sounding tube with pretty good bass extension but it seemed to lack clarity in the primaluna. Tried EH kt-88 after reading some nice things about it on here, and really liked the way it opened things up gave a little more sparkle on top than the el34's and the bass was tighter and threw a biggger soundstage One more try with the el-34 using the SED tubes - nice warm sounding romantic tube better detail than the mullard reissue el34 but a litle rolled off on the top end -amp seemed to lose some dynamics , but a nice tube.
Started reading some nice things about the shuguang kt-88 here and decide to try the shugaung kt88-98 which coincidentally looks an awful lot like the original power tubes that came with the amp.
They are by far my favorite tubes in the p2 and p5. They combine the warmth and fullbodied sound of the el34 with the sparkle and dynamics of the kt-88 .A detailed yet romantic sounding tube to my ears. Front end tubes are Tungsram 12ax7 and cbs -hytron 5814a.
For what it's worth I tried a lot of tubes trying to find the perfect tube before realizing I already had it.
By the way does anyone have any thoughts on the shuguang el34b?
How about the jjkt-77? Has the pin isuue been fixed?
