Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: How to tell NOS from new?

NOS stands for New Old Stock, which are tubes no longer in production. There were A LOT of tube manufacturers that now either are out of business (Tung Sol) or have repurposed their companies to sell other products (e.g. Raytheon, Sylvania). The list of vintage tube manufacturers and rebranders is simply too long too list.

Current "new" brands include ElectroHarmonix, Sovtek, JJ Tesla, Ei, SED, Sveltana, KR, Emission Labs, Valve Art, Shuguang, TJ/FullMusic, and a slew of other Chinese manufacturers.

Some brand names (note: names only, not any physical assets) of defunct, respected companies such as Tung Sol and Mullard have been purchased by modern manufacturers (in this case, New Sensor). These tubes, sold under their venerable old trade names, may or may not bear any resemblance to the older, revered designs.

There are some brands that are usually considered "new" manufacturers but are now out of business, so any of their tubes being sold really should be regarded as new old stock. Companies like Tesla Vrsovice and AVVT/Vaic fall into this category.

To add another twist to this already sordid affair, some manufacturers (e.g. Western Electric) who went out of business for a while have been resurrected and are now producing tubes again with the most of the vintage tooling, design, and some past experienced employees.

How can you tell new production from old? You research the tubes to find out when they were manufacturered. Anything made prior to the late 1980s is often universally regarded as NOS. In the 1990s, these new production companies started churning out new production tubes. Find yourself a knowledgable and reputable dealer.
