Please explain differences bet. smooth & ribbed....

When I initially replaced the Sovteks in my Aesthetix Rhea (phono preamp), I went with smooth plate Telefunkens 12ax7s. I seem to recall reading that these were to be preferred over the ribbed in this application, although, frankly, I don't recal why this was so, or whether it is accepted universally. What are the differences, not from a technical perspective, but purely from a sonic and practical viewpoint. Thanks for your help.
