Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: Related Question

You can look yourself 1st, the electrician may not be able to help. Initially, if your vintage gear have 2-pronged cord sets, try reversing the plug in the socket such that the former right side blade is now to the left. Notice if there are dimmer controls or flouresent fixtures (these are notorious as noise sources). Notice how many circut breakers (or fuses) you have in your home (older construction had no need to provide for microwaves, televisions, computers, clothes dryers, or air conditioners as most of these appliances had not yet been invented; only bread toasters, radios, carpet cleaners & lamps needed to be plugged into wall outlets & not all of these were expected to be used at the same time thus a single 15A circut could safely satisfy all the ceiling light fixtures & a 2nd single 15A or 20A circut could adequately supply all the wall outlets in the entire home (2 branch circuts for the whole house, refrigerators & clothes washers were the only major appliances). Turn off various appliances or circut breakers (if there are several) & try to isolate or discover noise sources internal to the house. Notice how many neighbors are hooked up to the transformer outside (such as a single transformer per block or ideally more). Obviously the fewer neighbors sharing the same transformer the better (rural areas are one customer per transformer but metro residential may be only one transformer per city block with street lights sharing as well). Notice how many overhaed wires connect to the outside transformer's top side insulators (one from overhead lines & one to Earth down pole indicates 7200 volts, two from overhead (pole Earth ground to side of can) indicates 2400 or 4800 volts & can be noisier). An electician cannot alter the power grid supply not what appliances your neighbors have in their homes.
