If it's a 5 volt tube, it might well be a rectifier, in which case i can't think of a good reason to lower the filament voltage--you want to keep the power supply impedance as low as possible, and lowering heater voltage should lower the number of electrons "boiled off" the cathode per unit time.

For audio tubes, I would guess that lowering filament voltage increases impedance (generally a bad thing) but also lowers noise, so it might be a good thing or even a REAL good thing in a phone stage. If you lower the filament voltage enough to decrease the electron cloud surrounding the cathode, expect short tube life, as the electron cloud protects the cathode from nasty incoming ionized gas, of which there's always a little in the tube.

Now you've got me curious. I'll have to try a reduced voltage in a phone stage and see what happens. Anyone have any experience with this?
