You can use a multi meter to do some measurements indicating the ativity of particular pins. This was the answer given to me when I asked about a broken guide pin.
However there was no mention of tube matching. I think you should prevail on a friend to let you use a good callibrated tubetester especially one that can measure both sections in a given tube. Definitely test the tubes you are getting. BTW what make vintage etc are they. Some 6DJ8 have become quite expensive.
