That should be a nice , quick project ! I have been through the hum/microphony problems before ;) If you get microphony , back off your filament voltage slightly and possibly try bubblewrap or a partially inflated bicycle inner tube underneath the pre . Adding weight can also help , damp the sides and base of the chassis with a few layers of self-adhesive roofing underlay . If it hums and all else has been checked (ultrapath cap or cathode bypass cap implented , no hum loops etc) , screen the valve . If it still hums once screened check the transformer is not making any noticeable mechanical noise . In the end you will wonder why the hell people pay $100 a time for NOS 12AX7 or Tungsol 6SN7 :)cheers
