I have some 3DG4's in my stash and have thought about using them
in hi-fi applications.I have not looked at them lately,but I do
not think pin 2 was connected to anything and was just being used
to support the mica.I do not know why the tube manuals refer to this
as an internal connection.Maybe they are just concerned because it
is touching the mica.I would just try your configuration out and see what happens.Do keep in mind that the PIV rating on the 3DG4 is
much lower than the 5U4GB.The maximum ac rms voltage per plate is
only 325 volts.The PIV is only 1050 volts.It is capable of supplying
400MA of current though.
