ProJect tubes in in Tube Box defective?

Hi all, I am 21 years old and the Tube Box phono pre is my first experience with tubes so I may ask so stupid questions. I am using the tubes provided with the Tube Box. I keep hearing about the tube glow etc...but my tubes never get more than a hint of glowing orange down by the base of the tube. It is very faint. When I go to the ProJect TB homepage (http://project-audio.com/main.php?tech=tubeboxse&cat=accessories&lang=en) the tubes in the picture are glowing a brilliant orange. I took the tubes out to inspect them, but I couldn't identify any broken parts within the tubes. The phono stage sounds just fine, so maybe I shouldnt even care if the light up or not, but I would like to know whats going on.
Also, is there any specific things I should look for in order to identify a broken tube? Or any websites you all recommend?
