That was maybe a little careless of me. Sorry. In any PP pair of tubes, they must be pretty closely matched at the quiescent operating point, or one will 'hog the current', and the pair will be out of balance and have significant distortion. As far as brand and such, who knows; but my own experience is that different brands and eras may bias up some volts (I use supply, 'fixed' bias) differently, so if used as a pair, in either 'fixed' or cathode bias, the above trouble will result, as you have experienced.Thus, if you have a tester that can test the tubes at your operating point of interest, and can grade them accordingly (I do, but most people don't), you're best to use PP pairs of the same brand, era, original matching, to avoid at the least bad sound. Certainly, if you fire up and the sound is execrable, shut off and DBFAP (regroup).
