Its not the color of the plates that make them better but its the composition of plate material that makes them better.For starters black plates usually contain graphite and the black plate tubes have better heat transfer characteristics.Also construction is typically more solid than the gray plate counterparts and vibration seems to be much less..If you ever had the speaker leads come off on your tube amp and you listen down by the output tubes and tranformer,I can hear the resonance and musical noise on a gray plate much more than I can on the black plates.Im sure this is due to the more rigid contruction of the black plates.
