I've owned and listened to most of those ampsStereo 70: the 'classic' tube sound - mushy, warm midrange - rolled off bass and treble. Several input board replacements are available - I'm currently running one with the Triode Electronics board with the EF86/12AU7 input and the amp really shines. With the addition of the SDS power supply capacitor board - the bass is excellent. Like I said, many tweaks are available.
Citation V - stock - it's a pretty dry sound - but lots of dynamics. This baby likes to run tubes HARD - I had several RCA 6L6GC black plates that couldn't hold up... though the Sovtek 5881 could take the abuse. Again - check out Jim's mods to this if you go this route. The output iron is massive and there's defintely plenty of potential with this amp.
Heath W5 - stock - these are so-so. I've heard a friends really modified pair and it was great - used battery bias on the input tube, converted to adjustable fixed bias (if I remember correctly - it's been a long time)... sounded great with old-stock EL37s
not too much experience with the Mac30s -I've mostly heard the 240 -
most stock Mac stuff never sounded that great to me (runs from the bricks and arrows) - but modified - oh wow - I heard newer Quads with a fully regulated 240 and it sounded fantastic - of course it was using a separate outboard Lambda power supply for every stage of the amp and was swinging wild amounts of Class B current driving those 'stats... surprisingly it really seemed to work well with those speakers.
