if the noise follows the tube, thats the bummer. If the noise doesn't move, the remaining tube is the bummer. FWIW its less important to match small tubes, although ideal, in a pre-amp which you are running in unbalanced mode, as long as you are using the same brand of tube. Re - replacing one or both tubes, if the tubes are relatively new (use wise, not callendar wise) I'd only change one, but if they are quite aged I will replace both (and usually in both channels). Middle aged, let your ears determine the need.
