I’ve had my USBTD for a month and its broken in very well, its VERY musical. Not very detailed, although all the detail is there its just back a row or two (or three) which I happen to like. Its very relaxed without being sloppy, smeared or loose. Bass and mid-bass is abundant, almost heavy and again without being sloppy/boomy.
This Scott Nixon USBTD is really great for its price. I had used an M-Audio Delta DIO as a digital SPDIF output in my PC via both a glass optical and a nice quality MIT coaxial to a California Audio Labs 24/96 DAC for some time and thought it was very good and actually made MP3 sound, as I’ve said before, way better then they have any right sounding. Total cost of that setup is three or four times the cost of the Nixon and I think the USBTD sounds better – more soul to the music. And it’s a whole lot simpler to use as it’s a primary Windows USB Audio Device.
I made all kinds of space to start ripping CD’s into WAV’s but I’m getting such amazing results from MP3’s I’m not in any rush.
Scott said the 3Xac adds a little more focus and detail but mostly it allows you to roll a power cord to taste which he felt had allot of impact as well as the right IC.
BTW: I’m also using an Amprex 6922 PQ white label.
I prefer it to my Denon 2900 in every way and although its not as good as my Arcam FMJ, its most similar to it and again, so darn musical that it’s a pleasure to listen to.
The guy I bought the Scott Nixon from was primarily using it on a MAC to an SinglePower MPX3 headphone amp and pair of Sennheiser 580’s.He emailed me recently and said he had tried a Lavry and a Benchmark DAC and was not getting near the results he was getting with the USB-DAC. He said he was sorry he sold it. Interesting.
