I think a tube tester is the very first thing any new vacuum tube user should buy. Did he also try swapping the cables from the R to L channel to see if the hum came from bad cables? A good start might be to replace the rectifier tube. If that does not work he will have to ship it to you, or take it to a local trusted tech. That little amplifier uses the EL34 vacuum tubes which are one of my favorite sounding tubes. John
