The 5687 is a much better sounding tube than the Russian 6N6 .... IMO. I also couldnt disagree more about the ECC99 and 6N6 having more resolution. To my ears the ECC99 and 6N6 have an etched and unrefined quality that can be construed as more detail. In other words, again IMO .... the ECC99 and 6N6 give you unnaturally emphasized detail that is both harsh and fatiguing .... not more resolution.I find the 5687 to generally be clean, clear and transparent sounding tube. For instance, there is nothing dark sounding about the Tung Sol D getter 5687, or especially the Sylvania 5687, in any of the circuits I have used with the 5687 tube. Finally, I think the RCA clear top 6cg7 is a better sounding tube than the ECC99 and 6N6 to begin with. I wouldnt make the change unless I was going to go with a better quality 5687 tube like the Tung Sol's; which I consider a superior tube to any of the 6cg7's.
