J- I know exactly what you mean about the Russian KT88s, especially those labeled Sovtek and Electro-Harmonix (I don't like the SEDs much either, tho); sonics is their fatal flaw--they are super-durable, last long etc etc.... in other words they are transistors in bottles. My best recommendaton is to go Chinese-- Shuguang, to be exact. They make 3-4 versions KT88 and they are ALL great. Plus, the days of "Chinese Firecracker" KT88s has been over for about 8 years! They are now durable, sweet sounding, and one of the least appreciated tubes on the market. I have NEVER had a problem. The Shuguang KT88-98 is the best overall (tube store.com has them; $49/pair, tho the solid plate version refered to on "superTNT"'s website as "GEC copy" has slightly better sonics. It IS a perfect copy of the GEC physically, and in an odd way I almost PREFER it to the mega rare, big $ U.K. GEC item. The solid plate Chinese KT88 sounds like a vintage TungSol 6550 more than it does a U.K. GEC KT88, i.e. great dynamics, frequency extension, tons of bass slam, and much treble "space" or ambience. The solid plate GEC copy doesn't seem quite as tough as the KT88-98 Shuguang, tho, so that's what I would buy.
