For 7 or 9-pins, use a stiff narrow tool such as a large sewing needle, stick between sides & gently squish grips together (prying too hard will flake off bits of a phenolic socket). Same procedure for octals 'cept tool possibilty is greater owing to the larger size. Also, simply manually twisting tube in that socket while checking will provide electrical contact.
