Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Some info - - Re: Siemens CCa info??

If you look in my gallery (link below) I have photos of four basic Siemens styles. Once there, scroll towards the bottom.

I don't know exact years - but sure I have the chronology right. I happen to like the "dual support" ones a lot. I call them "mid / later."

I compared them only briefly with what I call the "early / mid" but I'm not good enough to find any differences. I never compared them with the earliest or latest ones.

The CCa refers specifically to tubes made by Siemens (as far as I know). Also - the CCa means that when tested at the factory they had closely matched internal sections, low noise and low microphonics. I'm not positive that these are the three exact criteria, but reasonably sure. It does mean they are the cream of the crop. However when tested using today's standards you might find some not marked as CCa yet test better and sound better than a CCa. The marking has nothing to do with how it will sound in your (or my) system.

People will say test results don't matter - but rather it's how they sound that matters. This is true to some extent - but when we buy them we don't know how they'll sound and can only judge a fair price by test results.

Another note is it takes about 50 hours for a NOS to "settle in."

From most of what I've read - people tend to overpay for the "latest" ones and supposedly they don't sound as good as any made before them. But again - the marking has little to do with how they'll sound in anyone's system.

I hope this is some help.
