I had pretty much the same experience when I installed some of the old metal RCA 6L6 tubes in my amp. They were NOS and when they got warmed up for the first time it was rather intense for a while. My guess is that since the entire tube is painted there is a lot more paint getting hot than the just the silk screen writing on the other tubes. Plus those babies were from the late 30's I think. So the paint was maybe 70 years old.
