What was the original specifed tube type? Since the gain dropped dramatically, it seems as if you have inserted a different tube type # than the circut was designed for. Your presumed *other* tube may have identical pin-out but has different mu & operation parameters; in order to appreciate that tube you may need to change the circut (or at least alter the present part values) to accomodate it. You can look up close or identical tube substitutions (and operating parameters) here:
