Your amp sounds as if it has dirty connections. I recommend Deoxit R-5 to clean the pots, selector switches and tube sockets. As for reading tubes with the etched numbers, you might have better luck under bright light by fogging the glass with your breath. Etched numbers are visible until the moisture disappears.
