I'll take a try at suggesting what not to do: Do not try any 'mechanical' cleaning such as acraping with metal tools. This may scratch the glass, thereby creating an area for a crack to form during thermal cycling. You might try using any variety of readily availble solvents- rubbing alcohol, acetone or maybe MEK. Try a SMALL amount of solvent on Q-tips and work slowly. If you try the more volatile solvents be careful about ventilation and eye protection. Good luck...
