A polarized cap will pass current better in one direction than the other, thus the polarity markings. A non-polarized or bipolar cap may be substituted because capacitance is capacitance. You will have to try it for yourself to discover it it sounds better in your system; in mine, someplaces it did & someplaces it didn't (but they work). A schematic diagram will show polarity markings for certain large capacitance values simply because those values may only or commonly be available in a polarized electrolitic construction.
