Hi David,As I once owned the ASL AQ 1003 back in 2000 until 2002. I thought that it was a very nice sounding Tube Int. Amp as was able to sell it to a friend of mine. I think that it is a very capable and quite Musical little amp which will allow you to have a better understanding of what's in the recordings no matter which format?
As you didn't mention any PhonoStage to use in tandem with it, I would also recommend looking into one of the versions made by ASL or either something like Wright-Sound or Bottlehead Seduction as alternate means of listening to your LP's. As all of these are very sound options and each has a certain sound more akin to Musicality as opposed to adding a more Hi Fi'ish sound which many SS Phonostages are know to add, many of us whom have chosen the Tube Path purely out of gaining knowledge about just what tends to sound more Natural and more Real if you will method of reproducing Music in our homes.
Nothing of a Black Art involved in knowing which device offers a better sound when it comes to listening to Music with an open mind. As I've told many people whom inquiry about the differences in the sound of either SS or Tube Amps bass - I tend to think that just maybe Tube Amps bass is far more natural to my views of thinking bass was is meant to sound. As I think that it's another ill effect of SS designs by nature to over emphasis the entire bass line spectrum as an Illusion to trick those whom aren't in fact Musicians themselves and haven't any ideal what or how to listen. One recommendation which I shall make right of the bat - is to replace those EL34's with a Quad of SED EL34 Winged C's and the 12AU7/ECC82's with a Quad of either Tungsram or RFT 12AU7s and be prepared to be blown away, as either of these depending upon your overall preferences for Music will allow this amp to highlight just what's on the recordings to begin with.
Ideally you should already have a sound in mind which you've considered as a guideline as to which direction you wish to pursue in overall Musicality from this amp, and merely attempt to stock up on about 19 pairs of the 12AU7/ECC82s which most move you? and only you, as many of us here will always offer recommendations to others based upon what we find as the very best sounding tubes within our given systems - yet in the end it's all about what you consider as the very best sound coming from your system without any doubts whatsoever as to continue pursuing the overall Illusions of upgrading everyother month or so, and merely learn to be content with what you already own and merely tweak said item to the point where you know there's nothing else to be done to it, only after this point - do you consider if it's worhtwhile holding on to or replacing it with something which merits better Musical abilities or not? as all to often most of us at one point or another have only made what I consider lateral moments and not sound ones which are much better at highlighting what is meant to be an improvement at all.
All of this just to say, enjoy your new toy and welcome to the World of Tubes, as I think that you'll be finding it quite difficult to go back to SS amps just as many of us have whom have learned to put aside our biases and simply Enjoythemusic for what it's worth and continue buying as much Music as possible as a means to live life to the fullest.......................... as in the end it's the Music which matters most, does it Not?.
Be well and welcome home.
Regards,
- Oscar
