If you run them at low dissipation you won't see anything. The tube is rated at 50 watts, but will show color in the plate crease as low as 30-35 watts. So if you have an amp that runs them under 30 watts dissipation you won't see the red plate. HOWEVER...According to Eric Barbour, the cause of the red is misaligned screens (he spoke of the same problem occurring on early Svetlana 6550s), and misaligned screens cause other issues as well.
