I don't know anything about a festival but there was a meeting of the Bay Area Tube group this past Sunday (11th) at the Randall. The next meeting is 13 November from 2 - 5 p.m. They plan on having meetings every two months at the Randall. The last meeting was pretty interesting. A guy hooked up a line of capacitors on a switch so they could be selected. The capacitors were the last output capacitor on a Marantz 8B. Played music on each cap in turn without the audience knowing which cap was which. The rest of the equipment was a Patricia Barber CD on a Philips CD player and Klipsch Chorus II speakers. The audience evaluated. The most expensive caps were actually the ones that we tended to like least but overall the differences were fairly subtle. The one that was generally liked least seemed to be the Jupiter and after that was probably the Mundorf Silver PIO (keep in mind that we didn't know which was which until after our listening evaluations). The Solen did well as did a Panasonic cap. Even the electrolytic Nichicon that he ran was OK - not as good as the best, not as bad as the worst. Any thoughts I had about putting big buck caps in for output caps are gone. One combo that we listened to later and liked (not part of the original evaluation) is one that the guy running the test liked to use - a Russian K42 PIO bypassed by a Russian K72 teflon cap. I thought that sounded very nice...but I will say again that differences were there but were subtle. Anyway, I had fun.
