As a former owner of the SP-6C, I know that it had standard gain settings for the primarily vinyl era: 20 db line, 40 db phono, IIRC.I later replaced it with an SP-9MKIII which has a CD input with the gain reduced over other high level inputs by 12 db to 9 db. The gain of the current REF 3 unbalanced is just under 6 db.
Which is why I don't use a preamp at all with my CDP having both high output (4 volts) and low output impedance (75 ohms). I don't need an active gain stage in order to attenuate the CDP's output. The 67 db of overall gain, however, is welcome with my low output MC cartridge.
