When tuning guitar amps I do find the less expensive Telefunken 12AX7s to work well when the circuit does not respond best to other tubes. For the most part Raytheon 12AX7 black plate, '60s Mullard 12AX7 or inexpensive Sylvania 12AX7 are best with that over-driven sound. I find inexpensive RCA 12AX7 short plate to be a polite tube for clean sonics such as steel guitar.
