The logic is fairly simple: for the bidder (even if the bidder does not actually win the auction), it creates a reference record of recent auction prices, based on actual sales. After the auction closes, the final price is retained in your bidding history, for 30 days.Some people keep tabs on the current values of "items of interest". It is a form of "market watch".
And, quite honestly, it is my opinion that sniping is a rather tasteless approach to buying.
