Chuck Y,Thanks. You have waht sounds a quite standard array of tubes in your SP-10. the Sovteks are really not THAT bad, but the Amperexes are (can be) so much better.
I mistakenly bought quite a few Amperex A-frame 6DJ8s as I think the sound is very good in the SP-10, but those and Bugle Boys (which are exclusively 6DJ8s) only last perhaps 1-20 hours before becoming impossibly noisy and/or microphonic. Now I have 20 nice BOS A-frame Amerexes with no where to go except as workhourse cathode followers in the SP-8 or the D-115- a bit of a waste.
The best tube I ever heard in the SP-10 were a pair of old White label Amperex 6DJ8s. Mine were used and had a little noise, but as you commented, throught the noise, those 6DJ8s were superb.
That's frustrating- that the Bugle Boy is really the best sounding tube in all the 6DJ8 family in meinen Meinung, but they are doomed to a short, if glorious life in an SP-10.
Cheers,
Bambi B
