Glad to know that the picture lib was of help. Both Amperex 12AX7 and Mullard 12AX7 are fine tubes.Sorry for the evasive answer, but it would be hard to speak in absolute terms about the sonics of these tubes. It is function of the era (50s or 60s or 70s or later) for each tube type, the particular application, system synergy and personal preferences. Same tube could give different results in different setups. There is no such thing as The Best tube. Both Amperex and Mullard are amongst desirable tubes.
Joes Tube Lore is a good place to start with a caveat that it is one persons opinion. You can search with some keywords on this forum to get different opinions. Prices vary a lot on the condition, tube era etc. You should be able to find brand new Amperex or Mullards from 60s and 70s for anywhere from $100-130 a pair, or even less if you get lucky on ebay or with on-line dealers.
