Using a tube preamp with 30db of gain with a SS amp that only needs 1 volt for full output with drive you insane.A well designed and executed tube preamp or amp will sound very good. You will need to spend alot of money to match the quality of sound of tubes (done right) with solid state components. Done right, you would not be able to tell if you were listening to tubes or SS, everything would just sound very good.
If you want a tone control you could always look to adding some carbon comp resistors and paper-in-oil caps to your existing setup.
