Hi John
yes you are correct but that reisistor is really an inrush current limiter. That was put in in a lot of models because of the power supply turn on voltage is high until the tubes conduct fully..The way my amps are set up is the electrolytics are hooked up in series and they are 100 at 450 each giving me 900v so that takes care of the turn on.Also and this is a biggie I found on my own..So many times heath w5ms were doomed to have bad power trannies and didnt. This happend 13 times over the last 4 years with me on my amps and amps I serviced for people. What happens is the rectifier tube socket becomes conductive between the pins.I would be meausring resistance like 200k to 500k between pins and it would load that tranformer down and buzz along with bad filters to.What many times people would do is put a lower voltage power tranny in and that wouldnt react with the bad socket being it was lower voltage. The w5m tranny puts out 800v ac with no load so its quite strong.Anyway when I disconnected the power tranny and plugged it in,the tranny worked fine. All i really wanted to do was find the bad section of the tranny. Its turns out non of the 13 including my own had bad trannies. I hooked it up to a new socket and pluged in the 5r4 and it was fine. Then I put in the SDS board and voila.I will tell you what.I use 82uf@ 450v now which is just fine. There are 9 of them altogether.I get filter caps cheap on ebay. There is guy named william lee,the same as our AA buddy and he sells me 25 of the 82@450 radial lead caps for like 12 dollars. If you go to mouser its like 5 bucks each.He is in california and his ebay name is intfeathers.I get PIos from from him and all kinds of filters like 120@400 and 100@400 etc all for like 10 bucks for 25 of them.
