Re: a note for newbies: NOS tubes, money for audio, etc

I have noted this before, but DIY can often cost more than just buying factory direct in some instances. Starting from scratch or kit you should be able to estimate what it is going to cost if you do not engage in any variations (but who actually does that?). Buying a Dynaco that ended up being in very bad shape (choke, power transformer, can cap, sockets, driver board and the list goes on) I seriously walloped my budget. And what is really sad is since changing the driver board (and breaking the old one when removing it) I now hate the sound. Sometimes I wish I had just bought an amp at the shop, paid my $1,500 which is not much more than all of my time and money in the Dynaco cost me, and known what I was getting and left it at that. Ok, that’s not exactly true, I have learned a lot and enjoyed it but anyone who has ever bought an old house or a 60s amp should know that projects very often end up costing more than you thought they would, especially over time as you go back and tweak or old things just break. Not to say it can’t be a great value, but sometimes you end up doing more than you anticipate.

Not to denigrate anon’s point that there are cheap ways to go about getting sound that is probably 95% of what people pay 100 times for, but there are potential pitfalls especially in tube DIY that people should think about as they plan their budgets.
