William,Sorry, but a 6550 can pop a 10-ohm, 2 watt resistor quite easily, if the tube is shorted out. Heck I don't think that it is unusual for a 6550 to pop 10 watt resistors.
Anyhow, that's what the resistor is there for, to protect the rest of the amp (like $$$ trannies and the power supply).
One thing, how old are the caps and diodes in the bias power supply? Sometimes, when new tubes are put into an amp, the bias power supply circuit fails after a few hours of use.
