Thats it Steve. Just as your having its only on one side of one part of the tube.I think its more apparant in the black plates becuase of the more transparant plate structure when its lit up.The gray plates seem to have to paint or coloring and the glowing may very well exist in gray plates but we dont see it as much.Anyway you are right in that they are almost impossible to blow up black plates. I look at it like this. As long as its a slight orange glow you need not worry.If it becomes cherry red,you then should take action.
