Are the ones you are using in triode right now going bad or something? There are two things I know for certain about the GE 6550A-- they last forever, and there are tens of thousands of them in the hands of tube dealers and audiophiles. Just 3 dealers, Tubeworld (100+ quads = 400 tubes) Jim McShane 175-200 pieces,, and the tube store (500+ pieces)have over 1000 for sale at an average of about $75 per tube, pristine NOS-- and they are the nice green lettering version, too. Richardson Elec is rumored to be sitting on 2500 pieces GE 6550A, many labeled as Amperex Bugle Boy for the Asian Market. Doug's tubes and many, many guitar suppliers have them as well. My feeling, and the feeling of my circle of audiophile friends who have, among other amps, an Audio Research D250, a pair of Conrad Johnson Premier 8s, an ARC D76, a pair of Jadis JA80s and JA200s, plus numerous vintage 6550 amps like Heath W6 and Citation IIs, is that the SED/Winged C Svetlana walks all over the GE for 1/3rd the cost. I won't use anything else; my friends sold the nearly 75 GE 6550s that came in the ARC, C-J and Heath gear for about $30 a tube and bought Svetlanas-- they have never looked back. Now, if only Svetlana's EL34 was as good as their 6L6GC and 6550C.
