Tubes Asylum Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ |
|
Hi folks. I am getting (back) into tubes. Technically, I did own a tube amp long ago -- old Avery Fisher or Sansui all-tube receivers. As I recall they sounded "good" but tubes gave out and they were either tossed or given back to an audio dealer. I have some experience with tube pre's, have entirely too many at present (3), and want a tube amp but too many choices. If you really care, my current "inmate system" is up-to-date.Main problem is power-hungry speakers: Magnepan 1.6 QR (86 dB sensitivity). I did search(es) in the "Planar" asylum and many folks do run these speakers with a tube amp, some of them low wattage, which is good for the budget. Here is a summary, probably not complete, of those who claim to use the brand with "my" speakers:
Jolida 502a
Golden Tube SE40
Mesa Baron
Velleman K4040
Atmasphere M-60
Conrad-Johnson Premier 11The listening room "bright" (tile & drywall), about 10'x12'. So huge power (and, thus, money) isn't required. I could always keep the Carver cube somewhere if I ever need max power.
Budget? Perhaps as high as $2000. Prefer well-used as opposed to new, lose less on resale that way.
So what amp, or where to look? Suggestions please. Thanks.
