RE: Overkill...

Not trying to sound like a McIntosh hater. They did play a part in the beginning of HIFI. McIntosh are known for being built in the USA and being built to last, they have excellent resale value, and they look good.

But they do not sound good I mean damn they are the only amplifier manufacturer that use autoformers in their amps. Autoformers go in-between the output transistors and the speakers binding post/speaker autoformers are the reason the McIntosh amps could driver 2-ohm loads. They also doubled as a speaker protection circuit.

Other amplifier designers just designed more efficient circuit topology that could produce more currant necessary to drive 2 ohm loads without overheating. Using a better design made way more sense than using autoformers.

In the 1980's & early 90's my best friend's father was friends with Lahnie Johnson the owner of a high-end audio shop called Sensuous Sounds in Tampa FL an authorized McIntosh dealer and repair. Me and my friend could listen to anything we wanted I used to think McIntosh was King then as I became older and heard other amp's I realized McIntosh was like Rolex you're paying for social status not sound quality.
