Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

RE: What speaker is used in the Oscar Hall?

Oh, I am going to geek out over you mentioning Oskar heil. Oskar Heil invented "Field-effect transistors (FETs)" before the invention of bipolar transistors. Nelson Pass loves (FETS). Another of Oskars inventions is more widely known and that is the Air motion transformer a dipole design that would move air up to three times faster than the diaphragm by squeezing it through an opening smaller than the diaphragms radiating surface.

Oskar also was working on a low frequency version of this design but never accomplished that goal. In 1972 Oskar went to work for ESS and ESS had a young 21-year-old soon to be legend working there named Nelson Pass. It was that same year 1972 that Nelson started working on something that would keep up with Oskars air motion transformer the AMT-3 and the (SLOB) slot loaded open baffle speaker was born.

The design would triple the amount of air moved by the woofers this would increase the energy of the moving air by 9 times resulting in an increase in efficiency of 9dB. Once built it surprised everyone with its bass response and then the assholes in marketing killed the design due to the fact they thought it would not sell because nobody would buy a speaker that had no cabinet.

It sucks the audio industry is just like the rest of corporate America so much innovation is suppressed due to corporate greed. The audio world would have to wait from 1972 to 2011 39 years to learn of the (SLOB) when Nelson posted about the (SLOB) on his website PassDiy.com

I am a history geek, and I love the history of all thing's audio sorry if I bored anyone. Here is a link if anyone would like to read more in depth about the slot loaded open baffle.
