They are fantastic for several reasons:The quality of the cabinet is matched by few other manufacturers (this is true of JBL in general). If you haven't seen an L100 up close you will be amazed at the craftmanship. the grilles are not what you'ld expect (very impressive).
The mid freqs are boosted. This created the "West Coast Sound" that JBL pioneered in the 70's. I happen to love it. It seems I can hear the guitar pick hitting the stings or hear fingers during tapping.
The 123A-1 12" bass driver is a VERY nice speaker. It produces great bass. Plugging the port will thighten it up a bit. The L100 has great bass for a speaker without a sub.
The tweet is the L100 weakness. If you don't mind hacking the cabinet, replacing the LE25s with 035Ti titanium tweets. This will take the high freqs beyond your hearing range.
The crossovers are very simplistic and should be replaced with modern design aftermarket crossovers.
The L100 doesn't have a flat response curve. It isn't for the purists, but they are for everyone else. I listen to rock, jazz, opera, country, and everything else. It all sounds good!
