For the past few months I've been trying to figure out how to best put together a system for my somewhat unorthodox needs. That is, I chiefly listen 100% while sitting at my computer, and all my music is ripped lossless. My wife and I are in the process of selling our house and I will be getting a larger music room probably somewhere between 12x16 or maybe a little bigger.Anyway, I keep going back and forth on how I want to actually set up a system. At this point I think I've narrowed it down to a Benchmark USB Dac1 to get the music out of the computer. From there I'm really intrigued by the idea of active monitors, thus keeping things simple (the Benchmark can power the active monitors directly, thus bypassing an amp), yet I am a little leery of going nearfield and putting the monitors close to my computer desk. I guess I'm afraid I'm going to lose something by doing this ( sound-quality wise) because it just sounds too easy, plus I'm not sure I could get used to that kind of setup... seems awkward for some reason.
On the other hand, I've been thinking about strictly getting a power amp and some nice floor standers, which I think might be a more expensive in the long run, and a lot more complicated trying to match things up. I would like to keep it in the 4-5k range for the speakers, DAC, and amp (if needed), and probably wouldn't mind going used if I had to, although I would rather not.
I listen mainly to post-rock, noise rock, free-jazz, blues, indie etc. and will want something has has some power behind it for the rocking type stuff, but something that is audiophile quality as well. If any of you guys have some insight or ideas they would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
