for the Kappa 200The Kappa 200, 400, and 600 all use the same basic design, with the floorstanding 400 and 600 using the same mids and tweeters, but add side mounted 8%22 or 10%22 woofers. These were designed and sold for the European market, and constructed in Denmark. They were imported to the US for a couple of years, and then dropped.
This review is a bit sad, as this fine speaker was very short lived on the US market, and since Harman has apparently relegated Infinity to midmarket status, there appears to be no high quality offerings in the line (I guess Revel is their high end brand now).
The Kappa 200 is a standmounted 6 1/2 inch 2 way. It is very similar in engineering to the passive Intermezzo 2.6P, but uses a solid, very nicely made and finished wood veneered MDF cabinet instead of the 2.6's aluminum cabinet. Both models use 6.5 inch and 1 in. CMMD coned drivers, and 24 db/octave xovers. The 2.6 was a Stereophile fave a few years back, and I suspect the sound overall should be quite similar.
That sound is really very enjoyable. I've owned a pair of the downmarket fave Primus 150s, and I bought a pair of Interlude IL30s for a daughter a while back, so I expected a smooth, clean overall sound. These certainly have that, but also have much higher definition and superb soundstaging, wiht a meaty bass tonality that is most enjoyable down to below 50 hz. There is a touch of midbass emphasis, but the area is clean and without muddiness, so to me it is easily ignored.
When new, they are quite bright, even steely. After 50 hours or so of heavy breakin, they still maintain a bright signature, but are lacking in top end grain and grit. With a proper amp match, they are a joy to listen to, being very upfront, lively, and with excellent soundtage openness and delineation.
I had been using Silverline SR11s in my bedroom system. Except for bass extension, they were the best of many standmounts I've used over the years, save for the Merlin TSM-M, which had a mite better soundstage. I've moved the SR11s to my office now, and am using the 200s in my bedroom. They match the soundstaging of the SR11s, but oifeer better bass extension. They do have more top end output, but I find it quite acceptable.
Overall, these $1200 (retail) speakers are very much on a par with other good standmounts I've had, such as the Revel M20, Monitor Audio GR10, and Onix Ref 1s. Of course they all have different strengths; in particular the MA sounded most like the 200.
The best part of these is that the model came and went so fast in the US market that very few people know of them; accordingly the market price is very low compared to better known competititors such as the 2.6P, or MA GR10. I bought this new pair in truly beautiful maple for $400 on ebay; I know of no competitors anywhere near that price. The Kappa 400 and 600 also come up from time to time at very low prices for the quality.
Product Weakness: A bit of top end exaggeration, and a bit of extra midbass punch. Product Strengths: Great soundstaging, very fast and dynamic sounding, yet smooth and grain free. Pretty deep, powerful bass for a standmount. Top quality Danish construction, woodworking and beautiful wood veneer. Associated Equipment for this Review:
