I had a pair of AR 2ax's at one time that suffered from the same problem. They were oiled walnut, not lacquer or varnish. I tried Scotts Liquid Gold, light rubbing with 0000 steel wool, and finally sanding with 400 grit and re-oiling with tung oil. Nothing really worked. If your finish is lacquer, you might try rubbing with a little toothpaste to see if it will remove the ring. Not trying to discourage you though. You might try a post on the finishing forum at www.woodmagazine.com. Steve Mickley has forgotten more than most of us will ever know about finishing wood. Maybe he can help.
