Thanks to all. I really appreciate the input from you guys. There were some makers I expected and others I never heard of. Good show... thanks!Special thanks to Maui who responded cordially after all the shit and abuse he's gotten from me about 1st order designs. I hope the amount of crow I am feasting on is sufficient repayment for my previous transgressions. You're a good sport Maui! :o)
Ironically, the Green Mountain Europa Max's are catching my eye right now. The cast enclosure and the aesthetics are stunning. Only two drivers are used - midbass and tweeter. The felt-work around the tweeter is obviously a labor of love. Also, I like the design philosophy that Roy takes with his designs. He addesses the challenges of 1st order designs and explains his driver selection. The tweeter appears to be a famous and reliable Seas unit with a very low Fs. The midbass is nothing like I've ever see, having a Neo magnetic structure. I am big fan of Neo drivers - they can achieve amazing flux density using that magnet material.
All in all, I don't think you're going to find more time, money and energy put into a 1st order monitor for that kind of money. If they sound as good as their apparent build quality, they seem like an exceptional value. Other designs from other makers look nice, but truthfully, look like something I could build myself and are built using rather conventional methods.
I can't build the Europas for that price. And I don't know what Roy knows about 1st order designs.
I'm gonna call the distributor in Canada on Monday.
Cheers to all,
Presto
