Sub (REL strata 5) grounding issue (help!)

I'm having a problem with my REL Strata 5. I'm having what appears to be an intermittent grounding problem.
If I leave the sub on it hums intermittently. It will be silent for hours and then randomly will start humming at a moderate level (usually in the middle of the night). I have it connected via the hi-level neutrik connector, however I have tried disconnecting the black lead and connecting an RCA lead to an unused input on my Pre-amp as a ground. I discovered last night at about 4am this didn't work.
Any advice on how I could stop the sub driving me crazy (intermittently) would be great.
