The size of the basket has never correlated well with the radiating area of the cone. This is nothing new, and I don't think there's any controversy in it. No 8" driver has ever had an 8" cone, and in any event, radiating area is but one factor in loudspeaker performance. Generally speaking the only thing you can usually (but not always) say is that a 8" driver has a bigger cone than a 6" which has a bigger cone than a 4". Consider the original Advent speaker that used a 12" basket to house the cone from a 10" driver. Nobody ever complained about it, because it was a clever way to get more throw from the cone without designing a new basket and passing the cost on to the customer. It is true that some of the better small drivers put a lot of radiating area into a small package. But this is more expensive because it requires considerably more precision in the assembly process.
